New Local Rule Allows Electronic Measuring Devices at Village Links
Following a Decision by the USGA that went into effect January 1, 2006, we have adopted a Local Rule allowing the use of distance measuring devices, including electronic range finders, at the Village Links. Previously, distance measuring devices were prohibited by the Rules of Golf. The new decision gives each golf course or tournament committee the option of allowing their use.
Our Golf Shop will stock the SkyCaddie by SkyGolf®. The Sky Caddie is a small hand held device about the size of a cell phone that uses GPS satellite technology to give you key distances to hazards and to the center of the green.
SkyCaddie® is priced at $349. Users can personally program any golf course by signalling the center of each green the first time that you play the course. For an additional $20-$60 per year membership fee, users can download professionally measured programs for various golf courses. SkyGolf® offers several memberships, depending on how many golf course programs you wish to download.

The Village Links is scheduled to be measured by SkyGolf® late in March 2006 (they list the Links as being available, but that refers to the course before the 2004 renovation).
The Sky Caddie® will be available at the Village Links for $349 later this month. It can also be purchased directly from SkyGolf®. To purchase a Sky Caddie® direct from the manufacturer, or for more information, visit their website at www.skygolf.com.
When buying a distance measuring tool, make sure that it does not also measure ground slope, because such devices are still illegal. Also be aware that distance measuring devices remain prohibited unless specifically authorized by Local Rule at a given golf course or tournament. Most golf courses are expected to adopt a Local Rule allowing measurement devices, but many tournaments will continue to prohibit their use. They will be prohibited at all USGA Championships and PGA Tour events, including the 2006 Western Open Qualifying at the Village Links.
When playing away from the Village Links, you should always check to make sure that the Local Rule is in place before using a measurement device.
