Swingin’ Set Ladies Golf League Wins
IGL Division and Championship
The Swingin’ Set Ladies Golf League plays at the Village Links of Glen Ellyn and is a member of the Inter-Suburban Golf League. The SS has won the Western Division a few times in the 51-year IGL history, but 2010 was a great year for the ladies of the Swingin’ Set League. They beat seven teams in match play to win the IGL Western Division. They won the Killinger-Fassett Tournament for the fourth year in a row. And they went on to win the Championship against the IGL Eastern, Northern, and Southern Divisions. Ultimately they were the best of 32 suburban golf teams.
The 2010 Village Links Team included Sonia Burgess, Nancy Carter, Christel Gallagher, Christen Gallagher, Bonnie Girsch, Co-Captain Cass Hoffmeister, Paula Kavanaugh, Sandi Kleefisch, Laura Kozak, Co-Captain Mary Ellen Martin, Sara Noel, Deirdre O’Malley, Pat Takir, and Jan Toft.
Starting in May, the Village Links Team competes weekly against one of seven other Western Division Teams. These include Bartlett Hills, Bonnie Dundee, Fox Bend, Makray, Schaumburg, Village Greens, and White Pines. Based on their low net scores on the regular Tuesday League Day, six ladies out of the fifty in the League qualify to compete in match play against the Western Division Team scheduled for that week. Over the seven weeks of competition, 14 ladies qualified to play on the Village Links Team. The ladies have indexes ranging from 1.4 to 24.5, but they must have a handicap of 32 or less. After the second week of competition, the Village Links Team dominated the Western Division.
In July, ten members of the Village Links Team competed in the Killinger-Fassett Tournament held at Randall Oaks Golf Course against the same seven teams. The six low net scores of each team are totaled to determine a winner. The Village Links Team won for the fourth year in a row.
Then, on August 23, 2010, the Team competed in the IGL Championship, held at Lake Barrington Shores Golf Course. The winners of the Northern (Palatine Hills), Southern (Coyote Run), and Eastern (Glenview) Divisions also participated. Six ladies from the Village Links qualified to play: Cass Hoffmeister, Mary Ellen Martin, Bonnie Girsch, Pat Takir, Sara Noel, and Paula Kavanaugh. The format was similar to team play in that each team consisted of 3 pairs of partners, but instead of match play, the team recorded the best ball (using full handicap) of either partner. Two-partner teams turned in the total of the best ball score and then the three team scores were added together to get the total team score. The team with the lowest total score determined the Overall IGL Champion—the Village Links Team!
Hats off to Paula and Sara with a net 59!!!
AND Bonnie and Mary Ellen with a net 64!!!
AND Pat and Cass with a net 65!!!
Congratulations to ladies of the Village Links Swingin' Set Golf League!!!
